The Promoters having had the very valuable property (as described below) offered to them by the proprietor, and having made very satisfactory arrangements for the purchase or lease of the same, they have determined to place the property and the advantages connected with it before the public, and to develop, what in their opinion, must prove to be a most successful undertaking and one that will prove of 1 immense advantage to the district of South Canterhuiy. A small amount of Capital will be required to purchase the necessary machinery and to put the mine in good working order, so that the Company will be able to pay dividends shortly after starting. Large Lime Kilns are now in course of erection close to the property, The particulars of the property are as followslt is Freehold, of 20 acres _ in extent, the property of Mr George Mcrdith. In the land two shafts have been _sunk - the main or working shaft is 9ft by oft wide, and is 32ft deep, from which Coal has been raised from a seam 2ft thick. The shaft is timbered from the surface. The other shaft referred to (half a_ chain from the main shaft), is 7ft by 4ft wide and 45ft deep, and is well timbered, and has been sunk through two scams of Coal of oft and 4ft respectively, and on to a 2ft Gin seam. Fire Clay, and an excellent Chalk is likewise found in large quantities, and is pronounced by competent authority to be eminently adapted for pottery and sanitary pipes, gas retorts, firebricks, Ac. The Coal is easily obtained, and is of the finest quality for household and manufacturing purposes, and its superiority for the production of gas, and for steam purposes, has been proved by reliable tests, As this Coal is admitted to bo a really good Coal for steaming purposes, it is proposed to have constant-supplies in depots, so that the public can always get what they may require. Building Stone is found on the property, and Marble within a few chains, of a very superior description, also abounds, The Building Stone is a fine white stone, easily worked, and does not disintegrate from exposure to weather, sonic quantity of this stone having b;,en used in the building of the Christchurch Cathedral. A large quantity of good Timber is in close proximity to the ground, and easily obtainable. The Coal has been tried for steam purposes, and found to answer admirably, as the following testimonials show.— “Timaru, Nov. 29, 1880. “To Mr George Meredith, Kakahu. “ Sib,—l have used the coal supplied by you from the Kakahu coal mine (about five tons) in my mill in Timaru, and found it most satisfactory, and consider the coal well adapted to be used for steam purposes. Allen.” “ Eclipse Brewery, “ Tcmuka, Nov. 1, 1880. “ To Air George Meredith, Kakahu. “ Sm, —1 have used the coal supplied by you from your coal mine, Kakahu, for my steam engine, mixing it with Newcastle coal, half and half. I found it answer admirably, much better than Newcastle coal alone.
