SERIOUS CHARGE AGAINST A SCHOOLMASTER.
Hokitika, Ang. 8. The District Court to-day was occnpied witli (lie trial of \V. B. GaMana, of Knmara, for indecent assault on a young girl. The jury retired at 5 p.m., and are not likely to agree to-night. At the hearing or the above case, the witnesses evidence differed a good deal from that taken before the .Magistrate at Knimrn. Judge, Broad said that the case was before, him judicially, and he telt bound to say that it was not surprising there were discrepancies seeing several witnesses were young girls whoso evidence was taken after midnight. The prisoner might be prejudiced, as the discrepancies would not appear under the ciicnmsfnnccs of so much importance, and ho must say lie regarded tho taking of evidence of children at such a lime as most improper.
