THEATRE ROYAL.
There was ahother splendid house last evening, to witness the second performance of the" Pirates of Penzance.” A very great improvement was noticeable on this occasion, the opera going without a hitch, and the way in which the entire performance was appreciated by the large audience, must have been highly satisfactory to both the artistes and the management. Miss A. Leaf and Mddle. Murielle, were, if possible* in better voice than on the previous evening; while, Mr Wentworth was droller as “ Major General,” his capital song being vociferously applauded, and encored. Mr Harry Bentham, as “ Police Sergeant A. 1.” was as successful as previously in his song of “ The Policeman’s lot is not a happy one,” and his business and facial expression were truly excellent. He was ably supported by the other members of the force," amongst whom Mr Wilkinson deserves special mention for his by-play and lugubrious countenance. Owing to the enormous success of the Company in Timaru, they will remain one night longer than was originally intended, playing “ The Pirates” again this evening, and “ Pinafore” to-morrow night. A company like Mr Cary’s should be able to place the latter on the stage in a way that has never been performed here yet, and no doubt the last night of the Company’s appearance at the Theatre Royal, will be as successful as was the first.
