LATE CABLE NEWS.

(From Australian Papers). London, (undated). American people have subscribed £50.000 for presentation to Mrs Garfield, wife of the President of the States. In the struggle which resulted in the capture of Sfax by the French the number of killed and wounded natives was much larger than at first supposed. It has been ascertained that 400 Arabs were killed and 800 wounded. The loss to the French was small.

A great sensation was created by an Irishman named Heekie threatening, in London,'to murder the Right lion. W. E. Forster, Secretary of State 4 't Ireland. Heekie was arrested, brought np at the Bow street Police office, and after a preliminaay examination remanded.

The Oecumenical Conference in connection with the Wesleyan Methodist body has commenced its sittings in London. The Rev. Geo. Osborne, D.D., was elected President. Much indignation has been expressed concerning the cowardly threats made against the Right Hon. W. E. Forster, Chief Secretary for Ireland. Stringent precautionary measures have been adopted.
