FILTHY DAIRIES.
Auckland, Aug. 2. The Mayor, in bringing forward a resolution for the inspection of dairies before the City Council, referred to barrels of swill being taken out of the city, and the same barrels being brought back in milk carts. Since the motion had been tabled he had been waited on by a gentleman who had formerly been an inspector in the Hutt district, who stated that he had found, in a building used as a dairy, the putrid carcases of cows which had died, and in another portion of the building the putrid portion of a calf which had been taken from one of these cows. In another instance cattle were being fed in small paddocks, the stench from which could be felt at 100 yards distance. He also stated that milk pans were set under beds in bedrooms. These circumstances were surely sufficient to induce them to ask the Government to take stops in the matter.
