COMMERCIAL.
CANTERBURY CORN EXCHANGE. Christchurch, J uly 22. The following is the report for the week ending Friday, July 22: — Business during the week has been extremely quiet, the bad weather which has prevailed for the last few days, having augmented the torpidity which has been the chief characteristic of the grain trade for sometime back. , Values in all lines of produce are unaltered, and there is no circumstance which admits of comment.
Wheat.—Good to prime, sound milling samples are worth from 3s 9d to 4s per bushel in Christchurch, second class milling samples 3s 6d to 3s 8d j chick wheat ranges from 2s 3d to 2s 9d.
Oats. —There is no alteration in the demand and prices are stationary at from 2s to 2s 2d per bushel in Christchurch : feed quality are saleable at from Is 10d to Is lid.
Barley.—There is hardly so much inquiry during the week, but prices are substantially the -ame, prime malting may still be quoted at from 2s 9d to 3s 6cl per bushel, delivered in Christchurch ; second class malting 2s 3d to 2s 6d per bushel: feed quality Is lOd to 2s per bushel.
Grass Seed.—The market does not yet exhibit any returning signs of animation but there is no alteration to note in values. Good clean farmers samples are worth from 4s 6d to 5s per bushel delivered in Christchurch; indifferently cleaned, according to sample ; cocksfoot, 3|d to 3|d. Potatoes.—The export of the tuber continues to assume tolerably large dimensions, and, although prices have not advanced, the market appears to he more settled. Sales have taken place during the week at 40s per ton at suburban stations within a radius of 8 miles from Chistchurch. This price is for immediate delivery; for forward delivery 45s per ton is about the maximum, in all cases sacks are extra.
Cheese and Butter—The condition of the market has not altered during the week, the former is worth from 3d to 3£d per lb, the latter, 7Jd to 8d per lb. •Hay.—The demand does not appear to have realised the expectations. The price is £2 10s to £2 15s in Christchurch.
