The Parliamentary correspondent of the “ Lyttelton Times ” telegraphed from Wellington last night that there seems to be little doubt but that Mr Ormond’s amendment will be carried by at least five and possibly eight, Ministerial supporters held a caucus at noon to-day, but allowed nothing to transpire. To all enquiries the stereotyped reply is that it was “ highly satisfactory.” The correspondent of the “Press” also telegraphs that the general impression is that the no-confidence motion will be carried.
The railway traffic was resumed on the line to-day, as usual, the damage having been made good. At the E.M. Court this morning before E. G. Stericker, Esq., J.P., William Brown was charged with committing an unnatural offence at Temuka, on June 8. Accused, who was arrested at Winchester early this morning by Dectective Kirby, when making his way North, was remanded’to Temuka. • A telegram from Wellington states that the Opposition whips reckon upon a majority of seven or eight against the Government. In case of defeat, it is said that the Government will not appeal to the country, but resign at once.
