The following anecdote says “ Atlas ” in the “ World,” points to the fact that an occasional sense of humor in the British yokel (whether accidental ©r otherwise) survives the age of Shakespeare’s clowns. A vicar of a country parish had occasion lately to remonstrate with a lowly member of his flock who had regularly been conspicious, by .his absence from the celebration of the Holy Communion, for his non-at-
tendance. Hodge hazarded the excuse that he didn’t consider himself sufficiently qualified to attend. “Why not? ” urged the vicar, “ you have been confirmed.” “ Yes, sir,” replied Hodge, “ and vaccinated too, hut they neither of ’em took.”’
