FPeb Times Special Wibe.l Fastening Down the Safety ValveWellington, July 18. At the Magistrate's Court this morning, John Simpson, keeper on the hulk on board which the boiler exploded, was committed for trial on a charge that be did knowingly and wilfully fasten down the safety valve of the boiler. Bail was allowed, himself in £IOO and two sureties of £SO each. Passing Valueless ChequesInvercargill, July 18. At the Police Court to-day, Hugh Barlin, alias Baldwin, was convicted of five charges of obtaining goods by the issue of valueless cheques. He received cumulative sentences, amounting to 18 months. The Magistrate commented severely on the readiness with which storekeepers took cheques from unknown parties.
