THE STEEL RAILS JOB.
[By Cable]. Brisbane, July 13. In the Legislative Assembly last night a debate took place on the subject of the Report of the Commission which met in London to report upon charges in reference to the contract for the carriage of steel rails. In the course of the discussion Mr Griffith, the leader of the Opposition, made a speech, in which he acknowledged he bad been mistaken in accusing the Premier (Mr Mcllwraith) of complicity in connection with the contract, but renewed the charges previously made against Mr Ashwell, the Engineer representing the Government in London, of collusion with a firm of which the Premier’s brother was a member. Mr Griffith concluded by moving a motion setting forth that the contract for the carriage of the rails had been made subordinate to the interests of private persons. The debate continued for some time, but was at length adjourned to next sitting.
