The corrected census returns give the population of the colony at 490,084. The population of Canterbury is 111,024. Mr Moss Jonas submitted to the hammer at his rooms to-day, the Cave Arms’ Hotel, and the piece of land on which it stands, comprising 2 roods, 7 perches. The purcasers were Messrs Lachlan and McCormick, and the price £BSO. A wealthy Orangeman of Sydney has presented to ev‘ery Orange Lodge in the Australian Colonies, a silver medal, being a fac similie of the medal struck by Pope Gregory in commemoration of the massacre of St. Bartholomew. The medal is of about the size of a five-shilling piece, and the donation of such a number as souvenirs, must have cost a small fortune. An Auckland contemporary observes that the total value of all the whisky imported into New Zealand in 1880 was £61,901, and it paid in duty £143,639 ! Roughly speaking, for the privilege of drinking three pennyworth of whisky (actual value.) a man pays the State more than sixpence. Gin is equally profitable. £41,630 worth cleared for home consumption! yielded to the Colonial Treasury £lll,BOl. The British Methodists object to the proposal of American Methodists to introduce doctrinal topics in the Ecumenical Conference. To this narrowing of the scope of the Conference the American Methodists are expected to demur. •«»Dr Macklin, one of the Scotch missionaries at Blantyre, Central Africa, accused of gross cruelty towards the natives, defends his conduct, and maintains that it is necessary that the missionaries should exercise civil and criminal jurisdiction.
Mr E. J. Wilson, architect, invites tenders for erecting a grain store at Studholme Junction. Mr Robert Storm, grocer and provision merchant, has removed to Great North Road. Messrs Wildie, Allan and Stumbles have for sale privately? on liberal terms, several valuable building sites. Mr W. Evans, grain merchant, has on sale seed wheat, oats, and barley of premier quality.
