SCULLING CHAMPIONSHIP.
Wellington, July 7
The steamer Huia has been chartered to follow the sculling race between White and Hearn. The people of Wellington are anxious to back Hearn, but as yet little betting has been done. 5 to 4 is freely offered on Hearn, with out finding any acceptors. Several sporting men have telegraphed to Auckland endeavoring to get monej on, but replies are that not a pound can be got against Hearn. Both men are in good condition, and a spirited contest is anticipated. Two other rowing races take place on the same afternoon. Two shocks of earthquake was felt in Wellington yesterday morning. A formal sitting of the District Court was held this morning, His Honor Judge Ward on the Bench. The Court was adjourned until July 14. In the House of Representatives yesterday afternoon, Mr Fulton gave notice of motion in favor of allowing School Committees to permit Bible-rcading in schools, subject to a time-table and conscience clause, and Mr Pjke gave notice of a Bill to amend the Education Act.
