The Irish Land QuestionLondon, July 6.
In the House of Commons last night during the consideration of the Irish Land Bill in Committee, the Bight Hon. W. E. Forster, Chief Secretary for Ireland, proposed as an amendment to one of the clauses that Government should be authorised to lend one-half of the arrears of the Irish rents for the years 1878 and 1879 in cases whore tenants are £3O under the amount of their agreements with landlords. The proposal was debated at some length, but its further discussion was adjourned to to day’s sitting. In the House of Commons last night further progress was made in the consideration of the Irish Land Bill in Committee, Clauses seven to eleven were passed after debate, and progress was reported. Tenders for two South Australian Government loans of respectively £780,000, and £390,000, which were placed on the market last week, were opened to day. The total amount offered is £2,000,000. Tenders at £lO2 18s 6d will receive in full. Tenders at £lO2 18s will receive allotment to the extent of 61 per cent. The offers throughout averaged £IOO 19s 81. Discord in the Afghan ArmyCalcutta, July 6. Intelligence is to hand from Candahar that serious discord has arisen among the officers of the Ameer’s troops stationed at Girishk and Candahar. Dissension has been apparent for some time past, but it is now daily increasing and is creating considerable disunion in the ranks of the Ameer’s army at Candahar. Greek meets TurkAthens, July 5. In consequence of the intelligence received that the Turkish troops have re-occupied Arta, a large force of Greek troops is being despatched to the district. The latter have already crossed the frontier, and are rapidly advancing towards their destination. President Garfield Recovering. Washington, July 6. This morning’s bulletin reports that President Garfield is progressing favorably towards recovery.
