SECOND EDITION
The ordinary monthly meeting of the above took place to-day. Present—Rev G-. Barclay in the chair, and Messrs Barker, Goldsmith, tiowell, Gray. CORRESPONDENCE A letter was read from Mr Wakefield, M.H.R., stating that Parliamentary duties would preclude his attendance at tne Board for the next two or three months, and begging the Board to accept the intimation ns the resignation of his seat upon it. If, however, the Board would grant him a leave of absence until the end of the session he would not resign. The letter added that in the event of a bill not being introduced dealing generally with school sites he (Mr Wakefield) would be happy to introduce a bill dealing with the Tetnuka and Waimate school sites. Leave of absence was accorded to Mr Wakefield until the end of the session. ELECTION OF TWO MEMBERS. The Secretary stated that there had been two nominations for the seats rendered vacant by the resignation of Mr Lovegrove, Mr W. J, Steward, and Mr R. B. Walcot. Mr Walcot had asked that his name might be withdrawn, but the Act did not give the Board any power to deal with the matter. Mr Steward had received 31 votes. For Mr Postlethwaite’s seat there had been three nominations,Messrs Slack, Balfour, and Walcot. Mr Walcot had in this instance also asked that his name might be withdrawn. Mr Slack had polled 22 and Mr Balfour 9 votes. Messrs Slack and Steward were thereupon ' declared duly elected as members of the Board. Mr Steward then entered the room and was congratulated by the Chairman on his election. The newly elected member remarked that he hoped he should be of some service and took his seat at the Board. DEPUTATION. The Chairman of the Temuka School Committee and a member of that Committee waited upon the Board as a deputation to complain of the inefficient and limited accommodation for the infants at the school, and to urge upon the Board the desirability of proceeding with the building of the infant department of the new school at once. The Chairman entirely concurred with the remarks of the deputation re bad accommodation for the children, but regretted that no funds were at present available for building purposes. The Chairman asked when the deputation had withdrawn whether the Board had anything to suggest with regard to the complaints of the Temuka School Committee re insufficient accommodation and defective drainage. It was resolved that the Temuka School Committee be requested to report on a scheme to remedy the defective drainage, and also state the estimated cost of the undertakipg. A discussion followed on the other complaint, the insufficient accommodation, when it was resolved that the Secretary inspect and report to the Board on the matter. FRANKING CORRESPONDENCB. It was resolved, on the motion of Mr Steward, that Messrs Turnbull, Wakefield, and Studholme, M.H.R.’s, should be written to asking them to endeavor to secure for the Chairmen of School Committees the right of franking their correspondence through the post. A good deal of business, principally of a routine character, was transacted too late for notice in this issue. The Board did uot sit until afternoon to day.
