QUERY.
[to the editor.] Sir, —In an article recently reprinted by you from an English paper in reference to Conservatism did not the following words occur : —“ Prince Consort almost during his last days expressed himself as having no faith in a Liberal Government, especially one of which Mr Gladstone was the head, an opinion in which Her Majesty agreed.,” or words to a similar purport ? If such was the case, and for the information of many friends, would you kindly reprint the passage I refer to, and also give the authority ? By doing so you would confer a great favor upon yours, &c.,
ARGUS,
[The article our correspondent refers to was taken from the London “ World.” We gave the authority at the time. The following is doubtless the portion of the article referred to: — “ Dislike and distrust of the Liberals in general and of the present Prime Minister in particular were one of the solemn legacies left by the Prince Consort to Her Majesty. She has been true to the sacred trust, and the great moral which all rightminded readers are to deduce from Sir Theodore Martin’s big biography is that no follower of Mr Gladstone can be a good patriot and a loyal subject.” The Prince Consort’s antipathy to Lord Palmerston, a of the Liberal party, is a matter of history. The fact is, that the late Prince Albert, brought np in despotic Germany, never fully understood the spirit of the British Constitution, nor the temper of the English people. The Liberal leaders always resented bis interference in State affairs. —Ed. S.C. Times.]
