It now transpires that the would-be assassin, Gintean, was at one time a Consular officer, but was dismissed from his position. Evening. The latest bulletin regarding the President reports that his condition is unchanged. The bullet, it has been ascertained, pierced the liver and now lies embedded in the abdomen. From Gintean’s conduct since his arrest, it is believed that he is insane. Telegrams of condolence have been received by General Garfield from the Queen, the Prince of Wales, and the Marquis of Lome.
