LATE CABLE NEWS.
(Per Albion at the Bluff. [“ Age ” Special.] London, June 13. In response to the efforts made by the Governments of Germany and Russia to induce all the countries of Europe to combine against Socialism, the Socialist leaders have endeavored to arrange that a Congress, representing all belonging to the movement, should be held, by which a common plan of operations should be determined. It was intended that the Congress should meet at Lausanne, in Switzerland. Acting on the earnest remonstrances of Russia and Germany, the Swiss Government, however, have prohibited the Congress assembling in their territory. The French troops despatched against the insurgent tribes in Algeria who have risen against French authority' and massacred residents at some of the outlying stations, have succeeded in attacking and dispersing the enemy'. A dreadful shock of earthquake has been felt in Armenia. A large amount of damage was caused and over 100 persons perished. Terrible storms have occurred in the United States which caused widespread devastation. The city of Pittsburgh in Pennsylvania, situated on the Ohio river, has suffered enormous damage, the destruction of property being unprecedented. The Government are continuing to arrest persons who are concerned in stirring up disturbances in Ireladd. Up to the present time the total number arrested is 110. A tremendous hailstorm has occurred at lowa, U.S. A large amount of damage was done, and several persons were killed by the hailstones, which were of an immense size. June 15. The announcement that the Emperor of Germany’s prize plate of the value of nearly £IO,OOO, which was offered for the moat valuable Australian product at the Melbourne Exhibition, had been awarded to Messrs Costella and Rowan for Victorian wine, has been the subject of very favorable comment. This public recognition is regarded as marking the importance of the industry and testifying to the high quality of the wine produced. A great future is predicted for the Australian wine trade. The condition of Ireland shows little signs of improvement. Tne “ Times,” in a leading article dealing with the maintenance of the Land League agitation states that there is danger in the real grievance of the Irish tenants being lost sight of in view of the seditious character being imported into the struggle. The authorities are in possession of authentic information which shows that the land agitation has been utilised by Fenian leaders for their ends, and that the ranks of the League have been swelled by avowed Fenians from affiliated lodges established among the Irish of the United States.
