THE ENGLISH CENSUS.
Among the curiosities of the census returns, there is a case, well authenticated, of a girl nine years old with a child two months old. The report was at first doubted at the central office when the return came in, and an investigation w r as ordered, with the result of establishing its truth. The case is here regarded as one of the most curious ever known. The facts brought out by the census show an enormous increase of pauperism over all preceding years. It shows over 100 deaths from starvation last year in the city of London as brought out by the Parliamentary return just given to the public, the significent fact being established that the distress is increasing at an unprecedented rate in the agricultural districts, leading to the conclusion that these portions of England are but little better off than some of the worst portions of Ireland; also that the agitation for relief is sure to very soon roach this part of the kingdom.—" San Francisco Weekly Post.”
