COMPETITIVE CUTTING.

A novel competition between the local knights of the cleaver (says Saturday’s “ New Zealand Times,”) took place last evening at the establishment of Mr W. M'Keevcr, Manners street, Wellington. That tradesman advertised a few days ago a prize consisting of two dozen Invercargill ale for the best cut shoulder of mutton. Accordingly, last evening twelve “ all jolly butcher boys,” representing the various firms in the city, sent in the result of their “ cutting,” in the shape of plump shoulders of mutton, to the judge, Mr M'Keever, who after some little trouble (experienced as he is in his calling), decided for first honours in favor of F. Jones, an employee of Messrs J. and H. Barber, Willis street, and awarding a second prize to Mr Lomas, who ran his opponent very close. The proceedings being carried out in the open shop, created considerable interest amongst the casual pedestrians passing to and fio in Manner street.
