GOVERNMENT WORK.
[to the editor,]
Sill,--It is reported that the Government are about going on with the Albury extension, to give employment to tbe men of Titnaru at present out of work. Now, I know some men that were up there working last year, who, after paying for their rations, brought home on an average 15s per week for six weeks’ work. Now, that will not keep a family in Timaru during the winter months. What we want to know is whether it is to be the same this year. The Government brought the men into the country, and if the men cannot find employment for themselves tbe Government ought to employ them at wages that will got themselves and their families a living, and not take them to work for what will not find their families a living. Why not let the work by contract at prices that tbe men can make a fair wage at. I hope, Sir, you will find room for this in your valuable paper.—l am, &c. A WORKING MAN.
