The South Canterbury Farmer’s Cooperative Association have purchased the well-known premises of Mr Henry Green, opposite the Royal Hotel, for a sum of £4,600.
The Mammoth gift show will visit Timaru for three nights commencing on Thursday next. The Company last appeared in Oamarn, where the papers spoke in highly favorable terms of the entertainment. The performance, wc learn, is very varied, including amongst other artists, a ventriloquist, a Wizard, and a Mimic. The gift part of the programme is not the least interesting, as the presents aie said to consist of valuable articles. A correspondent writes in yesterday’s 1 Lyttelton Times” ; —I had hoped to have seen some further mention of the comet since the br : cf notice of a fortnight ago. I saw it on May 29 after sunset, to the south of west; then followed a succession of cloudy evenings, but on Tuesday morning last at 6a m. lo I a comet to the south of east, Can any of your astronomical readers give some account of this erratic body ? Is it the same comet, and why has it passed its perihelion so very quickly? It does not appear to have struck the writer that there may be two comets in the heavens at the same period. It is certainly a rare spectacle, and one, we believe, not hitherto noted in the annals of astronomy. The first visitor sets shortly after seven o’clock in the evening, and the second rises at five a.m. No intelligence of the appearance o! a second comet has been telegraphed from other places.
Abraham’s consultation on the Melbourne Grand National will shortly close. For particulars see announcement in another column. A seven mile walking match is on the cards between J. Lawry and J. Lambert, both of Timaru and well known for their Athletic performances. The match will be for the respectable stake of £35 a-side, and will take place at Saltwater Creek grounds, on Thursday next at 3 p.m.
