GERALDINE COUNTY COUNCIL.

The ordinary monthly meeting of the above took place at the Council's offices, Maclean and Stewart’s buildings, to-day. Present —Messrs G. C. Tripp (Chairman), Mendelson, Wilson, Clulee, Hardcastle, and Acton. SLAUGHTERING LICENSES. A discussion took place with regard to granting licenses to individuals and to firms. Ultimately it was resolved that the Council could only issue licenses to one person in future. THE HARBOR BOARD ENDOWMENT. A letter was read from the Colonial Secretary rc proposed Harbor Board endowment informing the Council in reply to their letter enclosing a resolution favorable to the granting of the endowment, that there was no power at present to make such reserves, and the Legisla f uro had of late years declined to sanction such endowments. A MUCH WANTED CONVENIENCE. A communication from the Post Office and Telegraph Department, Wel-

lington, was read acknowledging receipt of Council’s letter on the subject and stating that the erection of a telegraph system on the Albury line of Railways had been authorised, and that public Telegraph Offices would shortly be opened at both Pleasant Point and Albury Railway Stations. bangitata traffic bridge. In reply to a request of the Council for a copy of Mr Higgin'a _ report, on the Rangitata road bridge piles, a copy was forwarded from Public Works Department, Wellington. A letter from the Under Secretary for Public Works was read, stating that it had been decided, under all the circumstances of the case, to vest the control of the bridge in the County of Ashburton, and that the Chairman of the said county had been formally communicated with to that effect. Mr Acton then penned a strong remonstrance on the action of the Government, which was adopted by the Council, copies to be sent to Messrs Wakefield, Studholme, and Turnbull, M.H.R.’s.
