BIBLE IN SCHOOLS ASSOCIATION.
At the preliminary meeting of those favorable to the reading of the Bible in schools held last night, there was a good attendance. His Worship the Mayor presided. Mr Dawson, the convener of the meeting, was the principal speaker. On the motion of the Rev Mr Gillies, seconded by Mr Clemance, the following motion was carried : —“ That for the purpose of ascertaining the opinion of parents in South Canterbury in reference to the introduction of the reading of the Bible in schools, an association be formed, to bo called ‘The South Canterbury Bible in Schools Association, and that a subscription of Is per member be paid to cover expenses.” The following motion proposed by Mr E. H. Tate, and seconded by Mr C. G. Vogeler, was also carried : —“ That a Committee be appointed, consisting of the Mayor, Messrs E. H. Tate, A. L. 11. Dawson, D. Haggitt, and the ministers of the various denominations, with power to acid to their number, the Mayor to be President, and Mr Dawson to act as Secretary.”
