THE HEAVY SEAS.

The following telegram from Wellington dated yesterday, will help to explain the heavy seas which were experienced at Timaru during the week :Dr Hector kindly famishes the following : —A strong gale is reported to-day from Australia. It was advancing from tho> westward centre over Melbourne las& evening, and passes Gabo at 2 p.m. to day, where there is strong south wind; while at the same time a strong north-west wind prevails at Hobart. The storm centre reported at Adelaide on June 2, and at Gabo on June 3, has passed north west of New Zealand, and has probably caused the heavy easterly swell that has been reported as making; southward along the east coast for some? days past.
