QUARTERLY LICENSING COURT.

(Before R, Beetham, Esq., R.M., Chairman, T. W. Hall and E. Elworthy, Esqs., Licensing Commissioners.) The Quarterly Licensing Court for the Timaru, Levels, and Mount Cook Districts was held to-day. The police reported that the various houses throughout the several districts had becu satisfactorily conducted during the past quarter. TIMARU. The Bench said as the houses in the town of Timaru received so good a character from the police and there were no objections to renewals, renewals would be granted to the whole of the bouses. A temporary transfer of the license of the Shamrock Hotel from John Calianan to Thomas Flaherty was confirmed. LEVELS DISTRICT. Renewals were granted to the Arowhenua, Sportsman’s Arras, and Opihi Hotels. An application for transfer of license from William Warne to E. S. Bruton was adjourned after argument until June 20. The hearing of an application for a renewal of the Cave Hotel, in which Mr Hamersley appeared for J. Wildermoth, occupied a considerable time, a second applicant Griffith Roberts for whom Mr White appeared, putting in an application for the same license. The circumstances which led to this double application may be briefly stated as follows :—J. Wildermoth some time since gave- a bill of sale and a mortgage to Keast and McCarthy of Dunedin, as security for money advanced on his hotel, at the Cave and for goods supplied. Subsequently the Dunedin firm pushed Wildermoth for payment of the money due to them, alleged to be over £2,500. Wildormolb, while admitting bis indobetedness, repudiated the above sura as excessive, and now applied for a renewal of his license. Keast and McCarthy, however, had obtained bis signature to a blank form of transfer, in which they had entered the name of Griffiths Roberts, this person’s name having, as Wildermoth alleged, been inserted without bis knowledge or sanction. The case was ultimately adjourned until June 20. vrnnxT nook*. Renewals wore granted to the licensees of the following houses;— Railway Hotcl,Upper Waitaki, Burkes’ Pass, Fairlio Creek, Silverstream, Albury, Tekapo. The Court then adjourned to June 20.
