SUEZ MAIL NEWS.
[By Telkobaph.] Auckland, May 31. The following items of mail news were brought by the Arawata:— London, May 18. A deputation of merchants and others waited on Mr Gladstone, advocating counteracting duties on foreign sugars. The in reply, said he feared the existing treaties with foreign countries would prerent compliance with the request, but he promised to consider the matter. : May. 19. The French Government has intimated its readiness to enter into a commercial treaty with England. The Government have intimated they are unable to propose an indemnity to Mr Bradlaugh for the fine imposed" * upon him in connection with the recent proceedings against It is stated Madame Christine Nillson has arranged for an operatic tour in America, Australia and India. May 20, In the House of Commons Sir John !D. Hay, Member for Wigton, asked how many British subjects had been murdered in the South Seas since January 1880. Mr Grant Duff replied 40, and none of the murderers had yet been brought to justice. Sir J. Hay thereupon stated his intentionof asking what steps the Government intended adopting to protect British subjects from being massacred in future. May 22.
It is announced that an understanding has been arrived at between Russia and China, and a treaty entered into between the two countries has been signed at Pekin.
