AN ENRAGED HUSBAND.
Auckland, May 27. A man named Fred Goodall, a barman at the Waverlej Hotel, received a letter from a Mrs Maher, with whom he had formed an acquaintance, that her husband left for Te Aroha this morning, and to come up to-night to her residence, a two storied balconied house in Upper Queen street. He did so. After a conversation in the sitting room Goodall entered a bedroom, which was nnlighted, when Mrs Maher’s husband sprang out of a recess and commenced a murderous assault on Goodall with the leg of a chair. A desperate struggle ensued, both men falling through a glass door, Maher endeavoring to throw Goodall over the balcony into the street. Goodall’s cries of “murder" brought help, and he was rescued. His nose is bitten through, his hands and face cut with glass, and he was injured in other ways.
