RELEASED FROM GAOL.
The Sydney correspondent of the “ New Zealand Times ” writes :—Mr G. R. Dibbs lias just been released from Darlinghurst, having served ins twelve months’ imprisonment. But perhaps you have forgotten who Mr Dibbs is. Well, it is this Some years or more ago, Mr Dibbs’s brother instituted an action for a divorce from his wife, naming as corespondent Mr John Shepherd, solicitor, and at that time member for Wellington. Mr G. K. Dibbs appeared to take much more interest in the divorce case than did the husband, who was supposed to have been the victim of infidelity. He went to Melbourne, and hunted up with untiring zeal a largo mass of evidence ; but he allowed his zeal to outrun liis discretion, £or lio made use of some unguarded statements concerning Mr Shepherd in the hearing of a third party, and the wily solicitor at once instituted an action for slander. The end of the matter was that Mr Sheperd obtained a verdict for £2OOO, and as Mr Dibbs would not pay up, he was sent to prison for twelve months, where he occupied his time in making wood, ivory, and bone ornaments. He has just emerged with a stock of about 1000 evidences of his industry. It was telegraphed a few days ago that undergoing the imprisonment had not released Dibbs from Shepherd's liability, and thatDibbs had appealed to the Court of Appeal.
