ONLY A PORPOISE.
The following is from yesterday morning’s “ Oamaru Times The mysterious fish which has been for the last four or five months cruising about in the bay, and. defying all attempts to catch it, was harpooned yesterday, A boat’s crew under Captain Herbert and Mr Dart, the second officer of the barque Acacia, left that vessel in the morning intent upon its capture, and after some chasing the fish rose close under the bows of the boat, and was dexterously harpooned by Mr Dart. It was towed alongside the barque and hoisted on board, and formed the object of a considerable amount of interest to a number of visitors as it lay on the main hatch during the afternoon. It proves to be a large species of porpoise, commonly called a cow-fish, its length being 9tt 6in., and having a circumfeiencs at the largest part of the body of four feet. When struck by the harpoon the fish spouted a great quantity of blood, which dyed the water a deep red for some distance round it. The captain intends to have the skin tanned for boot leather, and it is estimated that the blubber will yield about ten gallons of oil.
