We have received a copy of a neatly bound and well-printed little book entitled “ Hints to Mothers.” Dr Ellis, of Christchurch is the author. The work contains a lot of valuable information which mothers should know, but which many of them unfortunately do not. The treatment and diet of children is a subject dealt with in a manner free from the technicalities of medical works generally, and for the sake of the rising generation we trust the Jiittle volume will have a large sale; Among the items of information concerning the passengers of the Tararua. (says ■the “ Melbourne Age)”, is one to the effect 'that life insurance policies to the number ■of 16, and amounting to £5600, are payable •.to surviving friends by the Australian "Mutual Provident Society, and that on one life the sum of £ISOO is payable by one of its younger institutions. By its last report the Australian Mutual is shown to have assured in 1880 no fewer than 6551 new members, while its deaths among 43,000 members for the same year were but 235. considering how many of its members are insured for large sums—up to £4OOO in many instances—the society may be congratulated on the smallness of the demand upon its three millions of accumulated lands by this disaster.

We have received the first number of the “ Wairarapa Star,” an evening journa' published at Masterton, .an important inland town in the Wellington provincial district. The proprietor of the “ Star” is Mr Joseph Ivcas, a gentleman well known in many parts of the colony, as an enterprising newspaper proprietor, and the editor is Mr A. W. Hogg, late editor of this journal. Judging by the number now before it, the “ Star” is undoubtedly the best journal ever published in W.i rarapn. In all respects it is a credit to its conductors. Some outhouses and buildings belonging to Mr Fonseca, dairyman, of Wai-iti road, w6re burned down this morning. Fortunately no cattle were destroyed.
