White, of New South Wales, who is en route for England, Silvia colt, by Musket, for 1250 guineas, the largest price ever obtained for a foal. Silvia’s first foal, since the Stud Company bought her, fetched 80Q guineas. Wool Duty. The United States ‘Consul received a letter from Washington, acknowleging the receipt of a petition of the Chamber •of Commerce of Dunedin re wool duty, and stating that the petition would be laid before tho Congressional Com•jnittce. Knocked off a Train Rogers, City Council employee, was standing on the platform of a train coming from Papakura races yesterday, when a scuffle ensued between two Maoris, and one Ngahe Thomson threw Rogers from the train, which was going about fifteen miles an hour. Yet when the train stopped and Rogers picked up, it was found that he had only sustained a sprained wrist, and slightly bruised. Thomsonwas charged with the offence at the police court and remanded.

Silk Culture. Wellington, May 22. The Government sent by last ’Frisco mail an order through Mr Creighton for n large consignment of silkworm eggs of green, orange, and white cacoon varieties, and for a quantity of white mulberry trees on which the worms feed. At the same time an order was sent to Sydney for 500 white mulberry trees two years old. The intention is to establish a silk culture in New Zealand. Tho idea was initiated by MrFeals, ot tho Survey Department, who is staled to be an .expert in that branch of industry. Fire. Invercargill, May 25. A barn and stables, owned by G. C. Brown, New Biver, was burned down last night. A lot of produce was destroyed. The loss is estimated at £250, (insured.)
