ABOUT HENS.
Fanny Field, in the “ Prairie Farmer,” has the following, which may interest chicken-raisers : For the benefit of those who are ignorant of the laying capabilities of the different varieties, I append the following ; —Light Brahmas lay 135 per annum ; eggs seven to the pound. Dark Brahmas, 125 per annum ; eight to the pound. Partridge Cochins, 130 per annum; eight to the pound. Buff Cochins lay about 110 per annum ; seven to the pound. Houdans, 150 per annum ; eight to the pound. La Fleche, 125 per annum ; seven to the pound. Leghorns and Plymouth Rocks average 155 per annum ; eight to the pound. Black Spanish, 140 per annum ; seven to the pound. Pencilled Hamburgs, 180 per annum ; ten to the pound. Games, 140 per annum ; nine to the pound. Game Bantams, about 120 per annum; fifteen to the pound. Roup, says the “ Western Rural,” is often the sequel of catarrh, caused by improper, ill-ventilated, damp, and filthy housing. In all cases isolate the birds at once, and immediately disinfect the water vessels.
Though the pure breeds penned together should be secluded from mongrels, they should be allowed a sufficient run for exercise, and all experimental comparisons should be made under precisely similar conditions.
