The photographs of the wreck and drowned passengers of the ill-fated Tararua, on view yesterday at Stone’s Hotel, have caused quite a sensation in Timaru, large numbers of people having inspected them during Mr Matheson’s stay here. One of the photographs of the dead was at once recognised this morning by a lady resident here, as being John Scone, of Eangiora, a labouring man, who has hitherto been unidentified. The agent proceeded to Christchurch to-day by express. The photographs it may be mentioned were taken under exceptional disadvantages. The fresh water required in the operation had to be conveyed in a bucket from a distance of four miles to the scene of the wreck, and even then the photographer spoiled his best view by dipping it by mistake into salt instead of fresh water. Some people will joke about anything. An Illinois paper says—“ A man fell into a vat of beer, at Pi qua, Ohio, the other day, and not being able to swim was drowned —a piquant mode of coming to one’s end.” “ Why did you come here ?” asked a a San Francisco lady of a beggar from the Atlantic slope, to which he proudly replied—" I didn’t’ come here for want anyhow ; I had plenty of that at home!” JLate Advertisements.
