CENSUS RETURNS.
AUCKLAND. A rough estimate has been made of the population or tlie whole Provincial District of Auckland, with the result that the population is estimated at
95,000 against 82,661 three years ago. The figures are thus sub-divided Boroughs of Auckland, Parnell and Onehunga; counties of Waiteraata, Eodney, Eden, and Manukau; Waiheke, Kawau, and other islands ... 61,000 Counties of Waikato, Waipa, Piako, Eaglan, and Kawhia, 8,000 Counties of Thames and Coromandel . 9,000 Counties of Hobson, Whangarei, Hokianga, Mongonui, and Bay of Islands 12,000 For the Counties of Whakatane, Tauranga, and East and WestTaupo 5,000 95,000 By telegram we learn that the in„ crease of population in the Waikato, Eaglan, and Kawhia districts since the previous census is 26 per ceht, and that further returns give the population of the Auckland Provincial District at 101,000. MELBOUENE. The following are the census returns for Melbourne and suburbs 1881. 1871. Melbourne city .. 65,265 ... 54,093 ffothara 17,766 ... 13.491 Fitzroy 2g,279 ... 15,567 Oollingwood 23,797 ... 17,598 Richmond ... ... 23,294 ... 16,889 Prahraa 20 885 ... 14,096 St. Hilda 11,856 ... 9,085 Emerald Hill ... 25,178 ... 17,101 Brighton 6,172 ... 3,059 Sandrldge 8,763 ... 6,388 Williamstown ... 9,020 ... 7,126 Pootscray 5,769 ... 2,483 Essendon and Flemington 5,034 ... 2,456 Bsunswick 6,220 ... 4,388 The totals for the metropolitan districts given in tbe above lists are as follows :—Males, 123,004; females 126,994: total, 249,998. The excess of female population over male is 5996» In addition to these figures, notice has to be taken of tbe outlying districts estimated by the Government statist in February at 17,630, and the shipping at 2039, and if these are added, the total population of the city of Melbourne is 271,667. In 1871 the totals for the tabulated metropolitan districts were : —Males, 92,075 ; females, 93,635; total, 185,510. The city has therefore increased by 66288 persons in the period.
