Mr T. G. Eowley has something more to tell his patrons about the New Davis’ Vertical Feed sewing machine in our advertising columns to-night. The average number of sacks of grain which arrived by rail at Lyttleton for ihe eight weeks ending April 30th amounted to 73,715, and during the week ending March 12th the number was 92,290. Mr Mathieson arrived in town from Oamaru this morning. He brings with him photos taken at the scene of the wreck of the Tararua. The photographs will be on view at Stone’s Commercial Hotel this evening. There are five portraits of unfortunate passengers who lost their lives in the wreck, and photographic scenes taken on the spot. Incendiarism appears to be rife in the Oamaru district. News received here this morning states that, two stacks have been burnt on Mr Teschemaker’s Taipo Hill Estate. As a considerable distance separated the two stacks, the fire is put down to incendiarism. An enquiry into the circumstances attending the destruction by fire of a stack of grain on the farm of one Me Dowell was held at Oamaru yesterday. The grain was insured for £l9O, and was stated to be the produce of 130 acresMcDowell told a witness that 700 bags had been burned. A threshing mill proprietor gave evidence to the effect that he had threshed McDowell crop of oats amounting to 163 bags. This was exclusive of a portion cut into chaff, which he stated was carted away to McDowell’s homestead. The verdict was to the effect tha the stack was designedly set fire to, but there was not sufficient evidence to show by whom.
The special correspondent of the * Standard, ’* who has so greatly distinguished himself in the war with the Boers is Mr Cameron. He was a reporter on the “ Bombay Gazette when the war broke out in Afganistan He went to the front for his own paper, and began to send occasional telegramsto the “ Standard. He speedily developed a wonderful power of graphic delineation, combined with that gift of organisation.which is equally necessary to a war correspondent. When the war broke out at the Cape he went thither for the “Standard.” He has outstripped all his colleagues as completely as Mr Forbes was accustomed to do. Late Advertisements. TABAEUA DISASTER.
