appointed Colonial Treasurer in the place of Mr Fowler, resigned. Hobart, May 12. The census taken on the 3rd April shows the population of Tasmania to be 116,000. Sydney, May 12. A serious fire occurred here to day on the premises occupied by J. Cunan, wholesale grocer, 600 George street, resulting in the partial destruction of the building. The stock was much damaged by fire and water. The insurance on the building and stock amounted to £12,000, including £IOO in the New Zealand Insurance Office, which will fully cover the loss. Another large fire occurred to-day in Haymarket, causing the total destruction of a store occupied by Harris and Co., general produce merchants. The stock and building were insured for £2OOO in the National Company of New Zealand.
