AUSTRALIAN NEWS.
The Wakatipu, which arrived al Wellington yesterday, brings the following Australian news : Sydney May 3. A meeting was held on Thursday for the formal inauguration of a Liberal Association. Among the elected VicePresidents were Dr Brooks, Messrs M’Donnell, Milner Stephen, Maiden, C. Bright, and Thomas. A Committee of twelve was appointed, including two ladies. More than 150 members were enrolled. Eight families of Italian immigrants, consisting of forty persons, remain in the Agricultural Hall. All the men are vine growers. Mayne, of the Bathurst “ Sentinel,” has been committed for trial for assault with intent. At the Vegetable Creek (in mines the Chinese continue to arrive daily, and now outnumber the adult Europeans by three to one. Numbers of Chinese are passing through Newcastle by rail daily for the northern districts. Many immigrants from New Zealand aie leaving for the railway extension. Adelaide. A new South Australian Fire Insurance Company is projected, with a capital of £IOO,OOO, in £1 shares. The Tararua disaster produced great grief here, especially among Wesleyans, who had made arrangements for enter taining the New Zealand representatives during their stay. Port Darwin telegrams state that splendid news has been received from Saunders’ rush. A party of Chiuatuen got BOozs on the first day and 15ozs. on the second. 150 Chinamen are on the ground. Bpisbane. The Premier has sent a protest to the Chief Secretary of Victoria, against the manner in which native troopers were dealt with in regard to the Kelly awards. A man named Smith,who shot a blackfellow at Tewantin, has been arrested.
