Very faint hopes are entertained of the recovery of young Garrett, who was seriously injured in the Eoslyn tramway accident.
The City of New York arrived at Auckland last night with the Frisco mails. The vessel has been quarantined. The father of some of the juvenile Pinafore choristers at Christchurch has summoned the proprietors of the show for declining to pay for the music. Mr Pollard was summoned for a similar refusal in Dunedin but the plaintiff was non-suited. A man from Balclutha named Joseph O’ Connell, aged 48, who was being treated for rheumatism at the Dunedin Hospital, was run down at Logan’s Point by the Port Chalmers train yesterday, and died a few hours afterwards.
The quarterly meeting of members of the English Lodge Victory, No. 42, 1.0.G.T., was held last evening at the Foresters’ Hall. There was a fair proportion of members present, and the chair was occupied by Ero Edward Jones, W.C.T. One candidate was proposed and one initiated. Sister Jane Jones presided at the organ. The W.C.T. informed the Lodge that owing to the non-arrival in time of the usual quarterly return forms from the G.W.S., the Finance Committee did not meet, consequently the reports could not be submitted. It was arranged that a special meeting of the Committee should take place on Friday evening next. The W.L. Deputy stated, that he had received a communication, from the G.Jj.’ Executive relative to the intended visit of : Bro Joseph Malins, R.W.G.T., to New Zealand, which he would read. The circular, which was rather lengthy, pointed out the special advantage to be derived from the visit, and concluded with a forcible appeal to subordinate Lodges to aid by substantial subscriptions, which would be required by next August. The Lodge next proceeded to the installation or the newly elected officers, when Bro W. C. Silverton, D.G.W.C.T., assisted by Visiting Bro Bridges, of Christchurch, as Grand Marshall, and Bro W. H. Kay, as Deputy, very impressively delivered the charges to the following;—W.C.T., Bro J, Blackmore; W.V.T., Bro J.' Saxon ; W.F.S., Bro L. Heggarty (re-elected) ; W.C., Sister Bainbridge ; W.M., Bro Holland ; W.D.M., Sister Francis; W.1.G., Bro F. Jones; W.0.G., Bro White; and W.A.S., Bro, W. H. Kay. Bro W. C. Silverton was afterwards installed into the office of W.S. by Special Deputy Bro Edward Jones, who takes the chair of P.W.C.T. for the next term. The newly elected officers having severally returned thanks for the honor conferred upon them, [a vote of thanks to the retiring officers was also passed and duly acknowledged. Two applications were made for the second degree, which will be conferred at next meeting. After dispensing a little harmony, to which Bros Saxon, Bridges, and Sister Jane Jones contributed e Lodge closed at 10 p.m.
A meeting of Wesleyans has been convened at Christchurch, to consider what is to be done in consequence of the loss of so many prominent members in the Tararua. The St. Alban’s Wesleyan Church have decided to allow the Eev. Mr Richardson’s widow the use of the parsonage for one year and to pay her the amount of bis stipend for that period. Relative to Mr J. 0. Eva, manager for the New Zealand Hardware Company, who contemplated a -visit to his sick mother in Melbourne, a strange story is current. It is stated that he had a presentiment that the steamer would never arrive at her destination. At Port Chalmers, he remarked to the mate pointing to his bos “ You see that box, now mark ray words, it will never reach Melbourne.”
The usual monthly meeting of the Timaru School Committee was held last evening. The whole of the members were present:—Mr Hammond, Secretary to the Board of Education, presented his report on the side school,, and suggested certain improvements in connection with the same; •Me Hogg gave notice of motion for next ordinary meeting that the resolution passed at last ordinary meeting in regard to Mr Harvey's application for the use of a room be rescinded. On the motion of Mr Hall, seconded by Mr Rowley, the meeting was then adjourned till Tuesday next, the Chairman stating that as certain important matters had to come before the Board of Education on Wednesday an adjourned or special meeting would be necessary.
The Timaru Harmonic Society give their final concert of the season on Thursday evening.in. the Theatre Royal, The programme consists of Barnett’s cantata “ Ancient Mariner,” and Gade’s cantata, “ SpringVMessage.” Tickets may be obtained frojn the Hon. Secretary, Mr R. Foster. We have been requested to mention that in securing the Theatre the Society has had to accept Hobson’s choice and as the terms of admission are the same to alLparts of the building those who desire a gopd position in the stalls or circle will require to be early in attendance.
