LOSS OF THE SCHOONER AMARANTH.
An enquiry took place at the Custom House this morning before C, E. Cooper, Esq., Collector ot Customs, and Captain T. W. Hall, touching the loss of the schooner Amaranth. Captain Mills, Harbor Master, was the first witness examined, and explained that his reason for not going after the Amaranth when he boarded the Circe was that the crews of both vessels informed him that in order to put the Amaranth clear of the Circe’s hows she had to be cut down on her starboard. fiicbard Alexander, captain of the Circe ; Colin Campbell, captain of the Amaranth, and Henry Charman, cook and seaman aboard the Amaranth, were also examined. Captain Sutter stated that he was agent for the South British Company. The Amaranth was insured in that company for £SOO. Was not aware of any other insurance. Had examined the schooner ; she was now a < total wreck. The evidence taken will be forwarded to Wellington, and if the ‘ authorities there deem a further en- . quiry necessary it will be held at the Coart house here before the Resident , Magistrate.
