BRITISH AND FOREIGN. [Reuter’s Agency.j The Land Bill Denounced* London, April 28. The Catholic Hierarchy in Ireland demand material alterations in the Irish Land Bill now before Parliament. They denounce the provisions of the measure generally, but particularly the clauses providing for grants to facilitate emigration. Smallpox in London. . There has been an alarming increase of smallpox in London of late. A great many deaths have recently occurred from the disease, and the number of persons now stricken down amounts to an epidemic. Aquatics* A second sculling match took place between Edward Trickett and the oarsman Kirby, resulting in another easy victory for Trickett. The Beaconsfield Monument* The Radical members of the House of Commons are strongly opposed to the proposal to be made shortly by the Premier that funds be voted for the erection of a monument to the late Earl Beaconsfield in Westminister Abbey. Wallace, the purser of the steamer India, has been arrested at Wddonga, and Wright, the captain, was arrested last night in Melbourne, while in a state of intoxication. The captain was armed, and a log book criminating the vessel, was found on him.
Six hundred and twenty-six sovereigns and bills to the value of £7500 were found by the police at a hotel where he was staying. NEW ZEALAND. TPbe “Times” Special Wise.! Fatal Accident. Alexander Buchanan, proprietor of the Ormond Pfotel, met his death last night by falling from his horse. He leaves a wife and five children. A Hotel LessWalker’s Hotel on the East Coast has been burnt down. It was insured for £3OO in the South British. Killed by a Train. Wanganui, May 2. A man named Thomas Carroll, farm labourer was run over and killed at Kailim by the Northern train on Saturday night. It is not known whether he was walking on the line or had laid down. The accident was only perceived when the driver happened to notice something dragging on the engine. Growing Slowly. The Census returns for the borough is 4,647, being an increase of 100 since last compilation/ Good for the Reservoir. Wellington, May 2. Much needed rain set in yesterday, and it is still raining.
