COMMERCIAL.

MELBOURNE MARKETS. M'Gregor, Gordon and Co report for the week ending April 13,1881 Breadstuffs.—Wheat has advanced to 4s, Bd, and 4s s£d is now paid for prime samples, ex store. We have sold during the week, ex station good Northern at 4s ,4d ; medium 4s 2d to 4s 3d. Great difficulty is experienced in getting first class lines for shipment to complete loading for London. Freights are easier, 455, to 47s 6d being the ruling rate. Arrivals of wheat front the country are falling off rapidly. Flour remains at £9 2s 6d net, ex station, and at this price we have sold several parcels. Feeding Grains.—The demand for good feed is steady at 2s 7£ to 2s 8d ; medium at 2s 4d to 2s sd. Tartarian for seed, 3s. New Zealand Milling.— We have sold at 2b 5d ex steamer in bond, for a prime parcel 2a 6sd to 2s 6d is the market value, demand brisk. English Barley.—Demand nominal at 3s Id to 3s 4d for good to prime. Feed and Oregon are at 2a 4d to 2s 7d respectfully. Maize is at 4s 3£d with an upward tendency. Bran 10|d. Pollard lid. Grass Seeds.—Rye Grass is in demand at 4s to 4s 6d stocks, are light and prices are advancing. We have sold out our entire stock at these rates. Cocksfoot is at 3§d to4d. Dairy Produce—Cheese —The demand for prime is good. We have sold good to prime at 4d to 4£d. The demand is is daily increasing. Medium and inferior are difficult to quit, Butter, Potted—A brisk demand exists for prime old potted, We have disposed of 143 casks during the week at 7d to 7^-d; good at 6d ; new potted at 8d to B|d. The demand for medium and inferior is poor. There is a scarcity of prime old and new in the market, and extreme rates are paid for this description. Butter Fresh—We sold our best dairies at Is 3d to Is 5d ; good, lid to 11£ ; medium, 7d to 7|d. The demand this week is good; supplies are short and far below requirements.

DUNEDIN MARKET. Mr Donald Stronach (on behalf of the New Zealand Loan and Mercantile AgencyCompany, Limited) reports for tha week ending April 27, as follows : Pat Cattle—lß9 head were yarded to-day including 20 stores and dairy cows, which Were disposed of at about the level of last week’s prices. Bullocks realised from £5 15s to £ll ss, and cows £4 15s to £6 15s per head. We quote beet beef 22s 6dper 1001 b, Fat Calves—Only 4 were offered, which sold at 14s to 19s each. Fat Sheep—A moderately full supply was forward, numbering 2,027, of which 190 were merinos. Cross-breds sold at from 10s to 14s 3d, and merinos at 9s* Fat Lambs.—Eighteen were penned, and old at 9s 3d per head. Fat pigs.—l9B were yarded, and sold at tom 15s up to 645. Grain.—Wheat: Business continues quiet without any alteration in last prices, at which we could readily place parcels of good to prime quality. For parcels in inferior condition or badly harvested quotations are only nominal. We quote prime milling 3s 9d to 3s lOd ; fair to good, 3s 6d to 3s 8d; inferior and fowl-feed, 2s to Sa per bushel. Oats are still in demand, principally for shipment, at about late rates; good feed oats can be placed at Is 6d to Is 7d, and milling at Is Bd. Barley— For Prime samples there is a moderate inquiry at 2s 9d to 3s; ordinary and inferior are unsaleable.

Melbourne, April 29. Mauritius advices to the 19th inst reports that 275 tons of sugar were loading for Lyttelton, The tone of the market is unchanged . The crops had been improved by seasonable weather. ; SYDNEY, April 29. New Zealand wheat, per bushel, 4s 6d ; New Zealand oats, per bushel, 2s 9d; maize, per 601bs, 3s. London, April 28. Adelaide wheat, ex warehouse, per 4961b5, is worth 495; Adelaide flour, ex warehouse, per 2801bs, remains at 345, and New Zealand wheat, ex ship, at 455. The bank rate of discount has fallen from 3 to 2£ per cent, and the market rate from 2| to 2% per cent.
