ORANGEISM.
The quarterly meeting of the No. 1 District Orange Lodge was held yesterday in the Oddfellows’ Hall, Sophia street, and proved both as regards attendance and in every other respect one of the most successful Orange gatherings ever held in Timaru. Bro J. M. Shepherd, District Master, presided, and Bro. Mahon, Master of the Temuka Lodge, No. 17, occupied the vice-chair. The following subordinate Lodges were represented:— Timaru, No 13; Temuka, No 17 ; Oamaru, No 19 ; and Wai.nate, No 27. Correspondence was read private Lodge, No 27, re Lodge seal ; (2) from Bro. Alfred Fisher, re the “ New Zealand Protestant.” Proposed by Bro Harper, seconded by Bro Poole, and carried —“ That in the Lodges in the district so much be levied on each member good on the books so as to cover expenses of this District Lodge.” Proposed by Bro A Mahon, seconded by Bro Beattie, and carried—“ That the Grand Lodge be asked to allow half the capitation fee for the working of this Lodge.” Proposed by Bro. W. Harper, seconded by Bro. Keeman, and carried —“ That all monies, correspondence, and business from private Lodges be done through the District Lodge.” Bro. Harper on behalf of the Waimato Lodge, No 27, requested the Grand Lecturer (Bro A. Mills) and the officers of this District Lodge to be present at an Arch-purple Chapter to be held at Wairaate on the first Friday in May. Proposed by Bro. Hayzelton, seconded by Bro. Beattie, and carried —“ That the next meeting of this Lodge be held in Wuitohi.” The Lodge closed in due form at G. 45 p.m. At 8.15 the subordinate Lodge, No. 13, opened their usual monthly meeting, in the Orange degree, Bro. J. M. Shepherd, W.M., being in the chair, Bro C. F. Hallam in the vice-chair. Bro A. Mills, secretary; Bro Adam Mahon, treasurer ; Bro W. Poole, acting chaplain. There were about IGO members present, including visitors. The quarterly financial statement was read and considered favorable. Correspondence was read : —(1) From Waimate re a brother with respect to his eligibility for the A.P. degree; (2) from Bro Eobert Irvine protesting against this Lodge giving a certificate to a brother who was not entitled to the same. A recess was granted, when all dues were received, fees amounting to £ls being taken. Several new members were proposed, and one member was suspended for non-attendance. The Lodge was closed in the usual order, and then raised to the Eoyal Arch Degree. This degies was conferred on seven members and at the conclusion of the ceremony the members sqt down to an excellaut spread. D.M., Bro. Hallam presided, and a variety of toasts were proposed, drank, and responded to, in an able manner. These included the usual loyal toasts, “The Charter,” The Grand Lodge,” and “The Imperial Grand Lodge of Ireland.” Songs and
recitations filled up the intervals between the speeches and the proceedings which were of a jovial character, terminated about 430 a.tn.
