The Auckland Autumn Meeting was well attended, notwithstanding a drizzling rain, which set in at noon. There was but little betting although the totalisator was well patronised. Tradesmen's Plate Handicap, of 50 sovs. Mr Smith’s Maid of Honor, Bst Sib 1 Mr Leonard’s Ratcatcher, Bst 21b 2 Mr McDonald’s Paramena, 7st 81b 3 Lone Hand, Miss Domett, and Dan w'ere scratched. Betting —G to 1 against Maid of Honor and Paramena. Time —Imin. Sllsecs. Ellerslje Handicap, of 100 sovs. Mr Owen’s Sir George, Bst 101 b ... 1 Mr Leonard’s Kenilworth, 7st Sib 2 Major George’s Tenambra, Gst ... 3 Tim Whifller,Miss Domett, Rosariua and the Slander filly also ran. Rifleman was scratched. Betting—G to 4 on Sir George. Time —Imin 20.jsecs. Hurdle Race Handicap, of 50 sovs ; distance, miles, over 9 flights of hurdles. Mr W. Mr McDonald’s Foul Play, 9st slb 2 Mr Douglas’ Rawenta, 6st 3 Matau, Tim Whiffler. Maoii, and Maid of Honor were scratched.
Dan threw his rider, but no injury was sustained.
Novel Handicap, of! 50 sovs. Mr 0. C. M’ b g Skylark, 7at 21b ... 1 Mr J. C. Mills’ b g Diver, 7st 21b ... 2 Magician was scratched. Only three started.
Betting—Even on Diver. There was a very good start. Skylark led, with Diver close to his heels, to the finish of the race, Omega a gold third. Time—lmin 50sec. The winner was sold for £26 to Mr Robert Graham. Publicans’ Purse, of 60 sovs. Distance, miles. Out of eight entries only two started, Foul Play and Maid of Honor. Betting—lo to 4 on Foul Play. The race was a determined struggle to the finish. Foul Play took the lead in the straight, and won by live lengths. HOKITIKA RACES. Hokitika, April 18. There was a large attendance at the races to-day, the weather being very fine. Trial Stakes, Mr Frecth’s Hero I Mr O’Shcrrie’s York ... 2 Hokitika Handicap. Mr Jones’ Warrigal ... 1 Mr Grimble’s Whalebone ... 2 Selling Race. Mr Harcourt’s Yorkey ... 1 Publicans’ Handicap. Mr Clarke’s Kensington ... 1 All the events were well contested. CHRISTCHURCH AUTUMN MEETING. First Day—Monday, April 18. The day was chilly, with an occasional shower in the morning, but the afternoon was warmer. There was a good attendance, the Duke of Manchester being amongst the number. No total!sator was in the paddock, in consequence of threatened legal proceedings by some of the bookmakers, but one was erected outside. The following are the results of the races: — Free Handicap ; a sweepstakes of 3 sovs each, with 50 sovs each added, for three-year-olds and upwards. One mile. Nautilus (Thompson) 1 Billingsgate (Wattle) 2 Romeo (Butler) 3 Nautilus declared 41b overweight, and Romeo 51b. The Poet had the best of it till the turn, but on entering the straight Nautilus and Billingsgate took the lead, the former landing an easy winner by a length and a half. Time —Imin 48fsec. Great Autumn Handicap, a sweepstake of 10 sovs each, with 300 sovs added, for three year-olds and upwards, the second to receive 25 sovs out of the stakes. One mile and a half. Grip was scratched. Libeller declared lib overweight, and Harkaway 41b.
Betting—2 to 1 against Natator and Sir Modred, 5 to 1 against Lady Emma.
A capital start was effected. Luna and the Governor led alternately. The Governor led into the straight, Luna being well up. Sir Modred and Natator then made play and looked like winning, but at this stage Lady Emma, whose light weight enabled her to be in attendance on the leaders, was judiciously forced to the front and brought in a winner amidst very hearty cheering, the victory appearing to be a highly popular one. The advantage was a three-quarter length. Natator occupied fourth position. Time—2miu. 43^secs. The Champagne Stakes, of 20 sovs each, with 250 added, for two-year-olds. Colts, Sst 101 b ; fillies, Bst 81b. Six furlongs. 26 subs. Somnus (S. Harris) 1 Peeress colt ... ... (Eudings) 2 Nonpareil (Derritt) 3 Betting—7 to 4 on Somnus. 10 to 1 against Gold Dust, 8 to 1 against La Mode, 3 and 4 to 1 against the others. Somnus led from the first and won in a canter. Time —Imin lO^secs. The Epsom Stakes, a sweepstakes of 5 sovs each, with 100 sovs added. For horses that have not won 200 sovs in one event, or two events each of the value of 100 sovs or upwards up to the time of starting. Maidens at starting allowed—For three-year-olds, 31b; 4 yrs, 71b ; 5 yrs and and upwards, 101 b. Weight for age. Once round. On Dit (Derritt) 1 Sir Garnett (S. Harris) 2 The Joker ... ... (Wattie) 3 Sir Garnet led at the start followed by On Dit, Joker and Eomeo. At the far end of the course On Dit was coming up, but did not assume the lead till near home. Time —2min 53secs. Second Day—Tuesday, April 19. The weather is dull but fine, and there is a good attendance. The Autumn Nursery Handicap,_ a sweepstakes of 5 sovs each, with 100 sovs added, for two year-olds. Five fuilongs. Eraser’s Hineraoa, Bst ... (Watty) 1 Weston’s Amulet, Sst 71b (Clifford) 2 Walter’s Peeress colt, Sst 101 b (Rudings) 3 Dauphin, Nonpareil, Samode, Envy fillv, Legerdemain, and Gold Dust also ran. Envy filly started as favorite at 5 to 2 against her. Hiuemoa started at 6 to 1. Amulet and Peeress colt made the running. The former led into the straight, 'where Hiuemoa began to come up and passed Peeress colt, and after a splendid race with Amulet won by a neck, Peeress colt third, 4 lengths awa} r . Time—lmin. ssccs. The Easter Handicap, a sweepstakes of 5 sovs each, with 100 sovs added, for three-year-olds and upwards, the second horse to save ids stake. One mile. Horsford's The Governor Gat 101 b (Rosewaral) 3 Rand wick, Hilda, and Prospero also ran. Betting—s to 2 against Lady Emma, 3 to 1 Governor, 5 to 1 Natator, 6 to 1 Hilda and Prospero. Lady Emma made the running. At the turn for home the Governor ran up to the leaders, but Natator came with a rush and collared Lady Emma and the Governor. An exciting finish resulted in Lady Emma winning by a nose, Governor a good third. Time—lmin. 41secs. The Selling Race, a sweepstakes of 3 sovs each, with 50 sovs added, for tlirce-year-oids and upwards. If entered to be sold for 300 sovs, allowed 7!bs ; for 200 sovs, I4lbs ; for 100 sovs, 211bs.
