MAGISTERIAL.

TIMARU—THIS DAY, (Before R. Bectham Esq., 8.M.) A SCHOOL MASTER CONVICTED OP LARCENY William Oldfield Eadford an elderly man, was charged on remand with stealing a gold chain and pendants, the property of D. M. Dennison, a laborer residing ncarAlbury. The accused pleaded guilty. It appears that the prosecutor is the occupant of a hut near Albury, and that he kept the chain wrapped up in a box there. He last saw it in the box on March 12, missed it on March 29, and subsequently saw it in Detective Kirby’s possession. The chain was pledged in Timaru for 8s on March 31, and the accused was arrested by Detective Kirby on April 14, when he said that he had picked up the chain near the prosecutor’s place. D. M. Dennison stated that he was a labourer, and that he had known the accused for some time, and that towards the end of March lie came to witness’s hut and bid him good-bye, and it was after this visit that the chain was missing.

His Worship in reply to Inspector Pender said he had known the accused for a number of years and had never heard anything against him before. He had kept a private school near the Cave and was in a respectable way of life. In reply to Mr Bectham the accused said ho was 55 years of age and had no occupation. His Worship remarked that he was sony to see a man like the accused brought up on a charge of this kind. He must punish him, but taking his age, his previous good character, and the fact of his having been out of employment and destitute, or partially so at the time of the theft, he would, this being a first offence, be sentenced to one month’s imprisonment, civil CASES. In the following cases judgment was given for the plaintiff with costs : Priest and Holdgate y. W. Wareing, 18s ; Phoenix Brewery Company v. J. Nelson, £35 6s ; Timaru Gas Company v. D. Geaney, £1 15s 9d ; Jas. Hatton v. A. McLeod, £2 ; A. Spence v. G. Osborne, £2 5s 6d ; E. Cornish v. Coram, £1 12s 3d ; Same v. L. Fow, £lO 12s lid. The Court then adjourned.
