THE SOCIAL EVIL IN WELLINGTON.

The social evil has attained such proportions in Wellington, that a deputation of house-owners etc.havebeen compelled to wait on the municipal authorities and urge the desirableness of prohibiting women of ill-fame from occupying houses within the City boundaries. Nearly 100 of the leading citizens signed the following “ We, the undersigned householders of the City of Wellington desire to bring, before your attention the serious loss to property and annoyance and inconvenience caused by persons of ill-farne living in houses adjoining property owned by ourselves. In many cases we are unable to find tenants for our houses from this cause, and when tenants are found they only remain a short time owing to the inconvenience of living close to the brothels. Young children are being taught the very worst lessons by example that can possibly be taught. Whilst this state of things is allowed to exist, the moral tone of the city generally is being very seriously affected. It has passed into almost a proverb in a district where a certain Act is in operation, that the people directly affected by the Act flock to this city with the daily result described. We consider as citizens that a serious wrong is being inflicted upon us in consequence, and we earnestly desire you to take such measures as will relieve us from our present position, and remove a reproach from our city.” Similar action will soon be required on the part of some householders in this City.”
