' The usual weekly session of the English Lodge Victory, No. 42, 1.0.G.T., was held last evening at the Foresters’ Hall. The W.C.T. Bro. Edward Jones occupied the chair. A candidate being in attendance in in the ante room, was ballotted for, and afterwards introduced and initiated. After a short recess, the Lodge discussed several important matters, one of which was a report of the united Committee of the Temperance Societies in Timaru ra holding a demonstration on Easter Monday, when it was resolved that it be adopted. A short half hour was then spent in harmony, during which two readings from Dr Richardson's treatise on the temperance question were delivered by the W.C.T., and songs by Bro. Saxon and visiting Bro. Bridges from Christchurch. The accompaniments on the organ to the Lodge odes and other con-, tributions of music were ably sustained by Sister Jane Jones, a new member, whose talent will form a pleasing and useful addition to the weekly meetings of the Victory Lodge. It was announced that the degree of Fidelity would be conferred next Lodge night upon those members who had served the usual probationary term, and two applications were made. Messrs Lovewell, Wing & Co, American photographers, continue to be remarkably well patronised, and considering the excel lence of the work they turn out, and the uniform civility experienced by the visitors to the Studio in George street, it is a small wonder. Some people imagine that these photos, because they are cheap mu«t neccessarily be bad, and will quickly fade, but we have been shown specimens of these photographs taken twelve years ago, which retain all their original clearness and delicacy. People are often deterred from going to be “ taken’’ in wet or cloudy weather, supposing that it will effect the carte, but with these American photos they need have no such fear. They can be taken quite as well in wet or damp weather as when the sun is shining, and in fact, in some cases, even better.
