The abundance of indications produced of late warrants a belief in the existence of paying quartz reefs somewhere about Wellington. Her Bandmann took a benefit at the Theatre Royal, Christchurch, last night when, there was an excellent attendance. Speaking of the event the “ Lyttelton Times ’* says Between the drama and the closing act of the evening, Herr Bandmann addressed the audience, in the course of his speech thanking the public for the patronage extended to his company, whose career in New Zealand had been a remunerative one, »s in four weeks the receipts had amounted to £llOO. He announced that he could not remain in Christchurch for more than six more nights. His thanks, he said, were due to Mr Beatty for giantiug him the use of the Theatre, and to his Company, who, after the dissolution of the late partnership, had, with only one exception, stuck to him honourably. He concluded h:s speech by thanking a portion of the Press for their kind, appreciative, and just criticism, referring at the same time to the alleged malice displayed by one critic. In illustration of this, he related an anecdote, the application of which was not very -apparent. The speech was received with frequent and loud applause.
