The amount of Property Tax received in Waitaki district, including sums paid to Postmasters is £12,107 3s Bd. The Boiling-down establishment of Mr Boyd Thomson, at Temuka, was destroyed by fire early yesterday morning. The premises, valued at between £2OO and £3OO, were uninsured. The annual meeting of the Timaru Agricultural and Pastoral Association was to have been held this forenoon, but had to be postponed owing to the circumstance that only half a dozen members put in an appearance. The members present were— Messrs W. Evans (President), J. O. McKcrrow, D. Maclean, B El worthy, H. Belfield. and W. Balfour, After the minutes bad been read, a brief discussion took place as to the advisability of putting oS the business till a future day in order that a decent muster might be secured. Eventually it was resolved to adjourn the proceedings till Saturday next. Some amusement was caused at the E.M, Court this morning during the crossexamination of a witness in an assault case, by Mr Kcid. “ What part of Ireland do you come from ?” enquired the counsel. “ Part of Ireland !" said the witness, a rather rough-looking harvest hand, 11 Why, Cornwall, to be sure.” The audience laughed innocently but they laughed in ignorance for there is a village of Cornwall in County Wexford. •' Pat” had the best of the grin in this instance.
