(Per s.s. Zealandia at Auckland.) NEW SOUTH WALES. Sydney, March 23. Haillhard, proprietor o£ the “Australian Magazine” and “Fun,” has assigned his estate. The Assembly negatived a proposal to reduce the Illawarra railway vote to £BOO,OOO, and eventually agreed to the original vote of £1,020,000. The total amount of gold known to have been found at Mounts Browne and Poole is 250 ounces. At Temora a discovery has been made in the upper town by Flannery and party, who struck passable water at 190 feet.
A miner named Palmer, while suffering from thirst, ran out of his house and fell down a shaft 85 feet deep. He was rescued without being injured. At Wilcannia diphtheria has made its appearance, and two cases proved fatal. Several fever cases are reported. A sensational occurrence is reported in connection with one of the special trains conveying Cole’s Circus and Menagerie from Goulbourn to Paramatta. The top car containing three lions, beipg higher than the other ones, struck a bridge crossing the railway aud the top was cut off. Two other cars were thrown off by the concussion. The lions made no attempt to escape. At Maitland a man died in the hospital of blood poisoning through skinning a dead bullock. The coroner stated it was the third case this year, and advised the burning of dead beasts. VICTORIA, At the sitting: of the Police Board yesterday, Captain Standish was examined at length, and gave a history of the search for the Kellys. He was severe on Superintendent Nicholson, who, he alleged, neglected opportunities which would have resulted, almost without the probability of a failure, in the capture of the outlaws. He said Superintendent Nicholson neglected to use the information he received to take effective measures. Superintendent Hare, on the contrary, showed a splendid officer and won the affections of his men. Captain Standish was equally as severe on Lieutenant O’Connor who had charge of the Queensland trackers. There was some tall scoring on Tuesday. In the match Melbourne v. East Melbourne , the former made 522 runs for the loss of nine wickets. Alexander made 128 and Bent 110, not out. I. D. Walker played in this match. In the match, South Melbourne v. Williamstown, the former scored 411 for six wickets, Slightmaking 205 not out.
