The new Priestraan dredge, which has just been put together by Messrs Jones and Peters for the Harbor Board, underwent a trial this morning in the presence of Mr Goodall, the Board’s engineer, and the other officers. .The chains were a little stiff at first, but the engine worked smoothly and the trial, on the whole, was satisfactory. The scoops are worked by a couple of chains, one being employed for raising and lowering and the other for opening and closing the scoop. A quantity of soil was used for experimenting with, and the apparatus seemed to do its work effectually, gathering and lifting about a ton of soil at a time with perfect ease. The dredge is so constructed that it can be used, when not otherwise, employed, as au ordinary crane for" loading and unloading vessels. The annual meeting of the Timaru Agricultural and Pastoral Association will be held at the secretary’s office to-morrow forenoon.
